BA peace deal with crew collapses
A negotiated agreement between British Airways and Unite, which represents BA crew, will not be put to a vote. The head of Unite said that without the approval of the workers' elected representatives, the union would not endorse the deal, saying it would be too detrimental to the union to overrule workers. The rejection of the deal hinges on the union giving up all outstanding legal complaints and agreeing that the airline has the power to withdraw travel concessions. British Airways says that the offer was fair. The dispute began last November over pay and working conditions, but after 22 days of work stoppages since March, the union says the issues are more about the tactics of the airline during the strikes. A precondition of British Airways' offer was that it was endorsed by the union.
