More strikes as Greek unemployment at 10-year high
Greek public transport unions continued striking on Thursday, halting transportation in Athens. The unions are protesting plans to cut subsidies from the government by 20% through ticket price increase, wage cuts, and involuntary transfers. A general strike yesterday stopped planes, and closed schools. The protests injured more than 25 people, including a former minister who was beaten by protesters in the street. The transportation unions have voted to continuing striking through next week. The Greek Statistical Authority released new unemployment figures on Thursday, with unemployment at a ten-year high of 12.4%.
