Cuomo Considers Cutting Up to 15,000 State Jobs
New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo is considering cutting up to 15,000 jobs in his budget, which will be announced in early February. The state is facing a budget deficit of more than $9 billion, and the Governor has already called for reductions in state agencies. The layoffs would cut clerical workers, state troopers and park rangers. Public workers unions are expected to fight back against the cuts, as they did when former Governor Paterson cut 900 workers on December 31. The unions say that they will wait and hear the Governor's proposal before responding. The Governor has also called for a one year salary freeze for state employees.
