Teacher salary system decried
A new study by the Boston Foundation added new fuel to the debate over teacher accountability just as the city of Boston enters contract negotiations with the teachers union. The study found that teachers under the current contract can receive raises of nearly 50% of their base salaries over their first four years for longevity and higher education courses, as well as the standard annual wage increases. In addition, the analysis termed the current contract as "costly and ... disconnected from student performance", and questioned whether the system "is in the best interests of the community". Meanwhile, leaders from the Boston Teachers Union responded by claiming the raises were necessary to "attract and retain talented people" for open teaching positions.
