Canadian National Railway, Union Avert Strike With Labor Deal
The Canadian National Railway Company has reached an agreement with the Canadian Auto Workers Union (CAW) over a new contract for almost 4,000 workers. The union represents mechanical, clerical, operators and truck drivers who work for the railway. The deal, which has not been ratified, will give wage and benefit increases to workers, and forestalls a strike. The contract expired on Dec ember 31, and the deadline for negotiations was Tuesday. CAW is also in contract talks with the Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. for 2,100 employees at that company, and has set a February 8 strike date if no agreement is reached.
