Liu Is Sued Over Wages
New York City's Comptroller has been sued by the Metropolitan Movers Association for allegedly ignoring a recent state Supreme Court decision regarding setting wage schedules for movers hired by the city. Comptroller John Liu was cited in May by the court for setting a wage schedule dramatically higher than those of both the marketplace and the federal government. While Liu's new schedule greatly reduces wages for those movers on the lower end of the spectrum, pay for most workers remains double that of the prevailing industry standard, according to Association officials. The court ruling has given rise to concerns about the relationship between city unions and Liu, a likely candidate for mayor in 2013. Liu has appealed the Supreme Court's decision.
