South Africa resists march of Walmart
Wal-Mart is continuing to face opposition to its acquisition of South African grocery chain Massmart. The deal was announced in June and was recently approved by investors. However, three government departments and the union Saccawu, which represents shopworkers, have filed an appeal with the South African competition tribunal, asking it to review its decision. The tribunal had decided that the deal could go through, but opponents say that they fear job losses and negative effects on the local economy, in addition to concerns about Wal-Mart?s anti-union stance. While the tribunal is not expected to stop the deal, the government is pushing for stricter conditions on the plan.
