Portuguese transport workers strike over austerity
Striking Portuguese workers shut down the national train system and Lisbon subway on Tuesday. The strike was the latest protest against austerity measures. The government is cutting pay and increasing taxes in return for a loan to keep the country solvent. The austerity measures will also cut workers entitlements. Portuguese unions have planned a general strike for November 24. The country is one of the poorest in Western Europe.
