Construction workers fight for unpaid wages as bill to block anti-wage theft ordinances moves on
A Florida House subcommittee has passed a bill that would end local anti-wage theft ordinances, even as workers campaign for back wages that they are owed. The Department of Labor has documented 9,000 cases of wage theft, amounting to $28 million in Florida over the last two years. The Florida AFL-CIO says that those numbers are probably lower than reality, and that the federal laws are very weak on this issue. Others say that the bill does not fix the problem, it allows people to continue the practice.
