In Michigan, a ballot measure to enshrine union rights
Michigan unions successfully pushed a proposed amendment to the state constitution onto the ballot for November?s election which would cement workers? collective bargaining rights as inviolable. The ?Protect Our Jobs? amendment would protect unions from Republican-backed ?right to work? legislation that would limit organized labor?s ability to negotiate contracts. Critics charge that the proposed amendment would essentially kill Michigan?s economy by discouraging companies from bringing jobs into the state. Analysts predict the proposal will increase voter turnout in a state that has the two Presidential candidates in a dead heat, according to recent polls.
