Yerington onion grower to pay record settlement to Mexican workers
A Nevada onion grower has reached a settlement with the Department of Labor that will require it to pay back wages to its foreign workers. The company will pay $2.3 million to 1,365 workers, as well as a $500,000 penalty. The Labor Department found that the company was in violation of the visa program when hourly wages fell below the minimums required, and that workers were not compensated for training and travel. The company said that they were happy to have reached an agreement with the Labor Department and that they were committed to following the rules. The Labor Department said that they were committed to enforcing the laws for workers.
