More than 30 killed in police crackdown at South African mine
More than 30 workers were killed, and 70 others wounded after South African police opened fire on striking workers at a mine. The workers are striking for higher wages, and police said that they fired to disperse workers holding machetes and spears. Around 260 people have been arrested. Ten people have been killed leading up to the shooting, including police officers. Production at the mine, the third-largest platinum producer in the world, stopped on August 10, when the workers began their strike. The strike has been complicated by issues between two unions who are both seeking to represent workers at the mine.
