Labor strife returns in South Africa's platinum belt
On Monday, workers at a South African that was the site of violence earlier this month blocked entrances and stopped others from going to work. 44 people have been killed in the last month, 10 from a conflict between unions and 34 who were shot by the police while striking. The violence, and the national week of mourning that followed, has drawn attention to inequality and other issues in South Africa. The striking workers are asking for a higher monthly wage due to the dangers present in their job. The mine says that about 13% of its 28,000 workers came on Monday, below what they need to resume operations at one of the world's biggest platinum mines.
