CAW votes moves Canada toward mega-union
The Canadian Auto Workers' union convention approved a plan to join with the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers union (CEP), a move that would give the new union 300,000 members. Supporters of the plan say that it is a good way to keep the labor movement strong. One of the main provisions contained in the merger is a $100 million budget for organizing new workers, well above what the two unions spend now. Members of CEP have to approve the merger at their convention.
