Two S. Africa mines reopen, situation still tense
Two South African mines reopened on Monday, but others remain shot down due to strikes by the miners. The unrest follows a strike at the Marikana mine, where 45 have been killed. The police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disarm the miners, and the army was brought in. Workers say that they will remain on strike, and that nothing the companies do will have an effect. The companies say that workers are being intimidated by strikers, and want to return to work. Workers at the Marikana mine say that they will continue to strike until the company agrees to their demand of raising wages, something the company says is impossible.
