AngloGold, Gold Fields Wage-Increase Talks End Unresolved
South Africa's largest gold producers will end talks with workers and pursue legal remedies in an attempt to end the strikes and violence. The companies say that they will not offer a higher raise until the mines are stable again. Over 40% of South Africa's gold output has been stopped. Last week miners rejected a pay increase from the gold companies. The courts have ruled that some strikers must leave areas that they have occupied, while companies have fired thousands of their workers. Truck drivers recently ended a strike after winning an 8.7% pay increase. Municipal workers say that they will stage a one-day strike in the future to push for standardization of wages.
