MTA docks two days pay for transit workers who were MIA during Hurricane Sandy and its aftermath
The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority said in an internal memo on Friday that it would dock two days pay from employees who were absent without calling in on Monday before Hurricane Sandy hit. The memo said that the workers can get pay later in return for giving up sick or vacation time. The Transport Workers Union, which represents MTA employees said that many workers rely on public transportation to get to their jobs, and that penalizing them for missing work after the system was shut down was wrong. The MTA said that they were only penalizing those workers who did not call in, and estimated that hundreds of workers would be affected.
