Chinese workers stage new protest in Singapore
Two Chinese crane workers staged a protest at a Singapore work site on Thursday. The workers were demanding back wages before they returned to China, and came down after hours of negotiations. The protest comes 10 days after the first work stoppage in Singapore in 25 years, by Chinese bus drivers protesting their treatment. Four of the leaders of the strike have been arrested and will be tried, while one has been sentenced to six weeks in jail and 29 others have been fired and sent back to China. International rights groups are calling on the government to drop the charges and change discriminatory pay practices. Singapore is highly dependent on foreign workers.
