On Monday, the American Federation of Teachers called for a new test for teachers that would be part of new standards for new teachers. The union also called for stricter training requirements, such as a minimum grade point average. The teachers say that like medicine and law, teaching should have professional standards that have to be met across the board. The proposed standards are part of a push to raise the status of teachers.
