Senate Talks on Farmworker Program Inch Forward
Farmworker and grower groups are closer to reaching an agreement on wages for immigrant workers, one of the last steps to reaching an agreement on low-skilled workers. Growers say that the workers make too much money, while advocates for the workers say that they do not. The farmworker groups also say that they are worried about the exploitation and fair treatment of workers. Under the current plan, farmworkers in the country illegally could obtain green cards in 3 to 7 years, depending on how much they worked. About 70% of farmworkers are estimated to be undocumented. The current proposal for pay would link it to job tasks and region.
