June 12 marks the International Labor Organization?s ?World Day Against Child Labor.? With an estimated 215 million children working across the globe, the ILO reports that one in 10 children aged five to 17 work in Latin America, one in eight in the Asia Pacific region, and one in four in Sub-Saharan Africa. Many are employed as domestic laborers under abhorrent conditions. Though examples of progress were cited, the ILO report calls for improved data collection and encouragement for governments to adopt ILO Conventions that establish boundaries for child labor.
