Fishing Spat Costs 10,000 Filipino Jobs in Taiwan Hiring Freeze
A Philippine coast guard?s shooting of a fisherman in May has caused a hiring freeze for several thousand Filipinos working for Taiwanese employers. After the incident, Taiwanese president Ma Ying-Jeou issued an order to freeze the hiring of Filipino workers. Taiwanese factory owners have since refused to renew contracts for about 10,000 Filipino workers. Money sent home by Filipinos working abroad makes up a large chunk of the country?s GDP.
