Detroit city workers, retirees push back on pensions
City workers and retirees in Detroit are seeking legal action against several measures the state has taken in prudence of bankruptcy. One lawsuit objects to a plan that the respondents claim violates protections in the Michigan state constitution by slashing retirement benefits for public-sector workers. The city currently lists $643.7 million in unfunded pension payments. A second lawsuit will challenge the viability of the state-appointed emergency manager position. Labor groups including representatives from the UAW have also voiced strong objections to the city?s reform efforts.
