Federal minimum wage a step closer to reality?in Germany
Germany currently has no minimum wage law. The new coalition government in Germany, consisting of the Social Democrats (SPD) and Angela Merkel?s Christian Democrats (CDU), are currently engaged in negotiations about the specifics of a minimum wage law to later be put to a vote. There are slight disagreements about exactly how much the minimum wage should be and how it should be implemented, but both sides are hopeful that a compromise will be reached. Part of the impetus for the new law is because of stagnation in average wages. For example, in 2012, 323,000 German households required public assistance because of their low incomes.
