On 160th day of demonstration, Bulgaria?s largest trade union joins student-led protests
Over 4,000 Bulgarian workers are protested on Wednesday against high unemployment and low wages. The protests are in the 160th consecutive day and were originally started by students frustrated by the government?s corruption and lack of progress away from communist tendencies. The students were joined on Wednesday by CITUB, Bulgaria?s largest trade union in demanding public sector wage increases. Although the government has made some reforms, unemployment remains at 12%, wages remain low, and many Bulgarians stand on the edge of poverty even as utility bills begin increasing as Winter creeps closer.
