UC labor walkout affects medical centers, dining operations
Thousands of employees of the University of California system represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union walked out of their jobs on Wednesday. The employees included service workers, student tutors, dining hall workers, and patient care workers. The walkout peacefully caused dining halls to shutdown, classes to be canceled, and elective surgeries to be postponed. About 70% of unionized workers in the medical centers at UCLA and UC Irvine showed up for work, but the labor action still cost the medical centers approximately $2.5 million. The employees went on strike to protest the state?s alleged ?intimidation tactics? and held similar walkouts in May.
