UPMC lawsuit challenges affirmative action rules
University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) is challenging a court ruling regarding how far the federal government can look when assessing an organization?s affirmative action practices. Nine years ago, UPMC was audited by the Department of Labor?s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) for its compliance with rules for federal subcontractors. The Medical Center has maintained the claim that the OFCCP?s search was invasive, but opponents claim that it is necessary to ensure that federal contractors and subcontractors are implementing fair hiring practices. Worker?s organizations including a wing of the SEIU and one from the NAACP have shown their opposition to UPMC?s appeal early and strongly.
