Wal-Mart to partner with farm labor group
On Thursday Wal-Mart joined the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, a labor organization that works to increase the wages of tomato pickers in Florida. The Coalition moves toward its goals of higher wages and improved working conditions through its Fair Food Program which has corporate buyers pay an additional penny per pound of tomatoes that is passed onto workers. Wal-Mart issued a statement announcing the partnership and a ?reward? for suppliers whose operations reflect the values and principles of the Fair Food Program. A Coalition spokesperson estimated that Wal-Mart?s support would increase the wages of about 30,000 workers.
