Pay Cuts, End Of Tenure Put North Carolina Teachers On Edge
Teachers in North Carolina have had issues with low pay, even to the point that after teaching full time for over three years, some are still unable to afford to live on their own. Now, the legislature has made changes to eliminate pay gains for teachers who gain their master?s degree, eliminated limits on class size, and effectively ended the tenure system. Teachers in North Carolina have taken up arms and are suing the state while other states? districts watch closely. The changes would have been unheard of a decade ago, but North Carolina has managed to make these sweeping changes all in less than a year. In addition to the cuts to pay, job conditions, and seniority, teachers in North Carolina are limited in how they can act collectively and cannot strike. Because of these limitations, teachers have marched on the state capitol, but never when school was in.
