Labor unions disappointed at 1% pay raise Obama to propose for federal workers
Labor leaders for federal workers? unions have used the past week to make it well known that they believe Obama?s proposed raise for federal workers of 1% is too small. One percent is the same size raise that civilian and military personnel will receive this year. Colleen Kelley, president of the National Treasury Employees Union, says that too small a raise, especially after pay freezes and inflation, will make recruiting and retention far more difficult. She will take her members? case to Congress on Wednesday and suggest that a 3.3% raise would be more ?fair and reasonable?. Both the president of the American Federation of Government Employees and the president of the Senior Executives Association have also spoken out against a raise of only 1%. Administration officials rebut that the 1% raise is part of a larger compensation package that will include training opportunities and other benefits.
