China Panel Dismisses Labor Complaint Against Wal-Mart
A Chinese arbitration committee had dismissed a labor dispute brought by labor activists against Wal-Mart Stores Inc. The three-month dispute involved workers who demanded additional compensation from the retailer. Although the committee has dismissed the case, workers still plan on appealing the decision. The company has been adamant that it follows Chinese labor law and has tried to treat the workers with respect. The case is significant because it marks a shift in Chinese labor relations toward a more conflict heavy process involving three distinct parties, away from the past model in which the union and the government were indistinguishable.
