Sodexo Cafeteria Workers Regain Health Coverage
Through a loop-hole in the Affordable Care Act, the food service giant, Sodexo was able to drop thousands of its employees from the company?s health insurance earlier this year. The move, which Sodexo tried to pin on Obamacare, resulted in dozens of protests and several union organizing drives, many backed by UNITE HERE. On Thursday, the company?s Vice President for Benefits, Julie Peterson, announced that ?about the same number of employees [will be] eligible as in the past?. The policy decision, Peterson explained, stemmed from the company?s desire to remain competitive in the market. Earlham College was the only one of the colleges where protests happened to amended its contract with Sodexo to ensure that all cafeteria workers who worked full-time during the school year would be given health benefits.
