Labor Union Calls Off Strike At Icelandair
After Iceland?s government threatened to ban industrial actions at airlines the mechanics of Icelandair backed away from their strike for better pay and working conditions. The airline cancelled flights and turned away thousands of passengers last week after talks over changes to the mechanics hours and wages broke down. The Icelandic government feared that further air disruptions would threaten the country?s recovery because tourism is one of the few industries still thriving since the collapse of the banking industry during the Great Recession. The Icelandic government has intervened in collective bargaining three times in three months which has prompted the opposition party to challenge the latest threat to ban strikes as violating workers? rights and the Icelandic constitution.
