South African metalworkers' union rejects pay offer, threatens wider strike
A mass strike by South African mining and engineering workers is entering its third week as union leaders vow not to break until employers increase their salary offer. Mineworkers have been on strike since the beginning of July, demanding a wage increase of at least 10% a year, along with a housing allowance for employers. The strike has widened concern among observers for South Africa's tenuous financial growth, affecting vehicle production and other industries. Union leaders say they will expand the strike to other areas of the country's industries if their demands are not met.
