Labor unions remain reticent on police union impact as protests spread
Labor union leaders have criticized police officer actions that led to George Floyd's death last week, as many of their members have rallied to support protests, but so far have resisted commenting at length on the power of police unions that may be complicit in police brutality. Union contracts for police office have stipulations that prevent immediate firing or interrogation of police officers after severe acts of misconduct; in addition, critics have said the complexity of disciplinary procedures for police officers prevents true accountability.
