Supreme Court adds milestone to LGBT rights by protecting gay and transgender employees against workplace discrimination
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 today that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which forbids workplace discrimination on the basis of gender, race, and nationality, also applies to LGBTQ employees, further recognizing LGBT rights since the Court legalized same-sex marriage in 2015. Currently 28 U.S. states lack substantive measures against employment discrimination; the ruling now increases worker protections under federal law. The cases brought before the Supreme Court - two gay rights cases in New York and Georgia and a transgender case in Michigan - argued that discrimination against LGBT workers was based on their sex and was thus illegal.
