Thousands of workers will strike for Black lives on July 20
Thousands of workers will walk off their jobs for a fully day in over 25 cities on July 20 in order to protest systemic racism and police brutality. The protest is being organized by labor unions, racial and social justice organizations, and will also include worker-led marches in participating cities. Those who can't strike for a full day will at least strike for 8 minutes, the amount of time that a police officer had immobilized George Floyd prior to his death. The organizers are asking that the government and businesses address obstacles that prevents economic mobility and career opportunities for Black and Hispanic workers. They also want to see guaranteed sick pay, affordable health care coverage and better safety measures for low-pay workers who were not able to work from home during the coronavirus pandemic.
