Chip Shortage Forces Ford, Toyota, Nissan, and Honda to Cut Vehicle Production
Automakers and electronic makers are facing a global shortage of necessary chips. The shortage has caused severe manufacturing delay. The shortage is the result of consumer demand recovering from the pandemic faster than expected. Major auto chip suppliers such as NXP Semiconductor and Nvidia Corp have been struggling to catch up with consumer demand due to supply constraint. Additionally, a move by U.S. regulators to blacklist China’s Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp, that country’s largest contract chipmaker, has sent chip firms around the world scrambling to find new partners. The supply constraints have caused automakers to scale back production and limit worker hours.
