LA garment workers are enduring harsh working conditions
In Los Angeles there are thousands of garment workers, many of whom are undocumented, who are being paid less than minimum wage, being worked nonstop, and barely making ends meet. These warehouses make clothing for well-known fashion labels and their workers are paid just a few cents per article of clothing, which amounts to anywhere from $250 to $300 per week. Workers groups are pushing for the passage of the Garment Worker Protection Act to end piece-rate payment and ensure a minimum wage for these workers. Many employers in the industry are opposing the legislation, calling it a “job killer.”
