New York City Council aides have formed the nation’s largest union of legislative employees. The Association of Legislative Employees (ALE) has 400 members and has been certified as the exclusive bargaining representative for the larger group of council member aides. Other legislative workers are seeking to unionize as well, such as the New York City Public Advocate’s recently formed union modeled after the ALE. An attorney who provided counsel to the ALE says that “The legislative workers' unions are seeking to professionalize and bring some stability to a decentralized employment experience.”
