El Milagro workers walkout over working conditions
Workers at Chicago's El Milagro tortilla plants say that working conditions have been poor and workers are fed up. On Thursday afternoon, employees walked out and marched down the street to deliver a list of written demands to management and request a response by September 29th. Workers waiting outside the plant chanting and protesting were escorted back to the factory to retrieve their personal items by police officers and were not permitted to return to the production line. These workers say that the tortilla shortage is due to a lack of labor which is due to the poor pay, the speeding up of the assembly line, and other harsh working conditions. One worker said, “Workers are tired. Enough is enough.”
