Nail salon workers advocate for industry change
In 2015, New York passed several laws to rein in abuses and exploitation in the nail salon industry, but workers say enough hasn't been done to protect them and enforce these laws. A February 2020 report by the New York Nail Salon Workers Association revealed that 82% of workers were experiencing wage theft at an average amount of $181 per week. Workers are advocating for the passage of a bill that was introduced this year in the New York senate and assembly that would create a nail salon industry council to enforce workplace standards across the industry. Both the senate and assembly versions of the bill are currently in the committee phase.
