Union files NLRB complaint that Starbucks closed Ithaca store in retaliation for activism
Workers United has filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board that Starbucks violated federal labor law when it decided to close one of its stores in Ithaca, NY, which had recently unionized in April along with two other locations in the city, making Ithaca the first fully unionized city for Starbucks. The workers at the College Avenue location went on strike on April 16, citing unsafe working conditions due to an overflowing grease trap. Starbucks did not comment on the reasons for the apparently permanent closure; the union attorney believes it was to send a message against union organizing.
