Gallup poll shows Americans have lost faith in 15 major institutions, but not in labor unions
Gallup does an annual survey asking Americans about how they feel about major institutions - such as the Supreme Court, the presidency, and organized religion. With the exception of one institution, surveyed Americans throughout June reported a loss of confidence in most organizations that is at a record low. Confidence in the presidency has fallen 15% from last year, in the Supreme Court by 11%, and in organized religion by 6%. But American still believe in the strength of labor unions, with their faith holding steady at 28%, a number that hasn't changed since 2021. 41% of Democrats still support labor unions, and the number of Republicans grew from 13 to 15%. In 2021, 140,000 workers walked out of work, and there were 265 work stoppages, according to Cornell University's ILR Labor Action Tracker. Union membership remains low/in decline decades after historic labor highs, with labor watchers believing that restrictive labor laws have contributed to difficulties in organizing.
