Labor Shortages in the UK Causing Significant Food Waste on Farms
In the UK, farmers have been struggling to find enough workers to pick crops due to the current high employment levels in alternative work that provides better job security and pay, such as warehouses. Additionally, the war in Ukraine may have made it difficult for seasonal workers to move to the UK, as the National Farmers Union reports that more than two-thirds of farm workers come from outside the UK through the seasonal workers scheme. As a result of the labor shortages, many farms have experienced crop losses, and the NFU has reported as much as £60 millions of food on UK farms has been wasted.
