Labor policies regarding right-to-work laws in Illinois and Tennessee highlight partisan divide
Ballot campaigns regarding right-to-work laws in Illinois and Tennessee were held over the weekend and reflect the different approaches to labor policy along party lines. The most noteworthy changes in labor policy recently have been occurring on the state-level, one of them being the adoption of right-to-work laws by some states to protect workers' freedom to choose whether or not to join a union. Republican lawmakers in Tennessee voted to include an amendment in the upcoming ballot to potentially solidify right-to-work as part of the state constitution. However, on the other hand, Democratic Illinois lawmakers added a policy to their upcoming ballot to protect collective bargaining and prohibit right-to-work. The success of these policies has implications on whether the current trend of US workers migrating to right-to-work states will continue.
