An overview of age discrimination in the workplace
Despite age discrimination being illegal, legal experts and polls suggest that this unfair treatment is widespread in the workplace. In the US and UK, thousands of age discrimination lawsuits are filed each year, and there are even more incidents of age discrimination that occur but are not filed as official complaints. Furthermore, age discrimination lawsuits are relatively rare because many cases are settled through severance payments, and these lawsuits are challenging for plaintiffs to win as there are some exceptions to the laws in the US and UK that legally justify it in certain situations. However, labor experts argue that as members of the workforce in developed countries continue to age, employers will need to address their biases against older workers in order to fill their job positions.
