Delivery workers, overworked from the surge in online retailing since the pandemic, facing increased surveillance and pressure from the rise in doorbell cameras
The rise in doorbell cameras in the past few years has had an impact on the nature of delivery work. This increase in surveillance has allowed customers to assume a supervisor-like role and monitor the actions of delivery workers as well as discipline them by releasing footage on the internet. As a result, this has eroded some of the appeal to work many delivery jobs in the gig economy as it has reduced workers' autonomy. Additionally, it has exacerbated pressures on delivery workers as customers have more tools at their disposal to track packages and feel emboldened to confront the workers.
