Debates over worker protections in Qatar continue as World Cup approaches
In anticipation of the World Cup being hosted in Doha, Qatar this year, there has been an overhaul of the country's labor system to address the human rights abuses. However, an organization called Amnesty has argued that these reforms need to continue even after the tournament ends, and that FIFA should create a compensation fund to benefit migrant workers that have been abused in the process of creating the stadium. There are claims that thousands of migrant workers are being denied wages and have been exposed to unsafe work conditions. FIFA and the country of Qatar have responded differently though, speaking to wide range of changes that have been made in the past few years to improve worker protections and constant improvements continuing to occur.
