Workers and businesses dispute good faith requirement in the wake of NYC's pay transparency law going into effect
As a result of the new pay transparency law that went into effect this week in NYC, there has been heightened discussion and conflict over what is an acceptable salary range. The law requires employers to display "good faith" salary ranges, however the standard for how to determine that metric is unclear. Workers in New York have expressed frustration with companies posting very wide ranges while businesses have expressed preferring to make ranges large rather than artificially narrow. Despite this new requirement, the law does not prohibit employers from changing the compensation range depending on the scope of particular job positions, but this must be an outlier rather than a pattern of behavior.
